Head Coach David Price leads NY Cosmos to first win in 25 years
On November 27, 2010, a new chapter in The New York Cosmos history was written when Academy Director Giovanni Savarese and Head Coach Dave Price brought their U-18 Cosmos Academy East players out onto the pitch for the opening game of their inaugural season.
This marked the first time in 25 years that the The New York Cosmos legendary crest was worn in a competitive match. This successful opening match was another positive step toward the club’s eventual return to the professional ranks. Since day one of its rebirth, The New York Cosmos have stated that developing world-class youth players was an important part of the club’s agenda. Judging by today’s great display of young talent, the club has shown that a solid and sustainable foundation has been established to rebuild The New York Cosmos in the right way – from the ground up.
In an exciting match, which took place over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY, hundreds of families and faithful supporters braved the wind and cold and came out to watch Cosmos Academy East take on South Central Premier (of Connecticut). A goal by David Diosa and two goals by Moriken Sangary gave the Cosmos Academy East a 3-2 win and a successful start to the season.
Says David Diosa, “To know that I scored the first goal in 25 years for The New York Cosmos makes me so happy. I mean, it’s an honor and I’m really excited to be a part of it all.”
Adds Giovanni Savarese, “It was very good to start the season with a positive attitude, a great environment, and a win! History has been made today with The New York Cosmos back on the field again, forming the base for what will come in the future. The boys looked good today and being a part of The New York Cosmos is a great feeling for them. They take it very seriously and have a genuine desire to be a success – in sport, in life, and in their community.”
